What Should I Know About Cytomel?

Guest 10 February 2005 23:00:28

My Endo agreed today to put me on 5 mcg (daily) of Cytomel, in addition
to the .15 mg of synthroid I take daily. She said, and I tend to
agree, that the reseach on Cytomel's efficacy is inconclusive, but that
"it wouldn't hurt" me to take the 5 mcg of Cytomel daily. The reason I
asked about Cytomen is that I read the New England Journal of Medicine
article that said that Cytomel appeared to improved mental clarity in
patients who took Cytomel in conjunction with a T4 supplement (i.e.,
Synthroid). The one nagging problem I do have, even when my Synthroid
brings my function near normal, is to get a ltitle brain fogged.

It seems tome to be ok to keep my synthroid dosage level at .15 mg
daily, as only a portion of the T4 produced from this will produce SOME
T3, and I'm only being prescribed a small dosage of Cytomel (5 mcg).

Are there any interactions between Cytomel and any other
foods/substances I should be aware of (e.g., substances/foods that may
cancel out the therapeutic effect of Cytomel)?

Thanks,

K

Please read the NEJM 02/11/99 article on this. They recommended 10mcg of
T3 and enough T4 to bring the TSH into range.
