Aching, sore joints, muscles and tendons Thoronwen 18:58:08

Do any of you have experiences to share regarding treatment for aching
joints and tendons? I'm looking for something other than rest, ice, and
anti-inflammatory medications. Maybe herbs or vitamins?

I started lurking here years ago (in my mid 40's), when I was looking for
possible links between tinnitus and tendinitis. I don't remember which
bout of tendinitis that was (shoulder, elbow, knee) since I've had
several.

I'm dealing now with pain on the backs of my hands. Nerve conduction
studies ruled out Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. (I would have thought the lack
of numbness and tingling in my palms would have made that clear. However,
since I type a lot, CTS was the first diagnosis from two doctors.) The
current theory is tendinitis, which would at least be consistent with my
history.

Thanks,
T

Share your opinions about women's health! Stacey 23:43:49
In the past decade, women's health information has become more
prevalent in American media and scholarship, yet little of this
information has focused on women's opinions about their health. I am
interested in your opinions about women's health, the media, and body
image, and I am conducting an on-line survey about these important
topics.

I am especially interested in gaining the opinions of women who have
experienced menopause.

It would be great if you could take 20 to 30 minutes of your time to
offer your valued opinion. Participants who complete the survey will be
entered into two raffles, each for an opportunity to win $50.

If you'd like to check out the survey, please visit:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=611032130066

I am an Assistant Professor in the Edward R. Murrow School of
Communication at Washington State University. This project has been
reviewed and approved for human participation by the Washington State
University Institutional Review Board to ensure this research is
conducted in an ethical manner.

I appreciate your time and help with this matter.

Thank you,

Apologies Amethyst aka Harry Andruschak 02:05:26
If any of you have responded to one of my postings, and have expected an
answer...I regret to report that I seem to have some sort of problem with AOL.
As an example, when I logged on this morning, I was informed that I had 131
postings but only 19 were actually displayed and available. I have notified
AOL, but have no idea when this will be corrected.

Urinary incontinence a part of menopause? Jean S. Barto 09:57:25
 Hi folks--

I've noticed a greater tendency towards bladder incontinence during the
summer. Nearly every day, I have an "almost accident," meaning that if I
didn't get to the potty *right then*, I would definitely pee my pants.

I'm also getting twice a night during the night to pee, and this is even
with taking my generic Ditropan, which was prescribed to me a few years ago
by my VA urologist, for less acute symptoms than what I have now. Before
this summer, I only needed to get up once a night, and occasionally, I slept
six hours straight before waking up with a full bladder.

Drinking fewer liquids is a non-starter, as I run most days and need to
remain properly hydrated. That said, if I drank the amount of water/liquids
that folks really recommend, I'd never leave the bathroom!

I start classes on the 21st, and I'm a little concerned. I'm barely able to
go an hour without peeing, and my classes are at least fifty minutes long,
and some longer. I'm only 51, and don't want to trade in the menstrual pads
for Depends just yet!

Thanks in advance,

Jean in VA

Bladder control: Scratch your leg! Keera Ann Fox 09:57:24
"Women trying to control the sudden and seemingly irrepressible urge to
get to the bathroom need only to vigorously scratch the back of their
leg.

"This unusual suggestion put forward by a Victorian physiotherapist
claims to cure the short-term battle many women face trying to hold on
when their bladders are bursting."

Hot Flashes, Night Sweats and Menopause Trippinkpj 01:25:50
I started Peri Menopuse about 7 years ago with hot flashes and
irregular periods. My last one was 5 1/2 years ago. I'm still having
hot flashes if I go off of HRT. I'm currently taking a supplement with
helps but doesn't totally take them away. I've brought it up to my
doctor, although she thinks it's not that unusual and wants to put me
back on HRT. From the post-menopausal point, I wonder what's normal in
number of years to have hot flashes. I know I should read more, and I
think I've heard 5-7 years is average.
Thanks all.

The three excerpts on the webpage are well worth a good look imo, I
especially liked the one on bioidentical hormones. Each topic has

Vitex And Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) Herbs Wholesale 06:08:46
It also appears that the benefits of vitex are not limited to
alleviating PMS symptoms. Vitex is believed to help reduce some of the
undesirable symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and clinical
studies indicate that vitex can optimize a woman's fertility by
regulating ovulation to boost the chances of conceiving a baby. The
herb is associated with decreased fertility in men. Vitex can also help
the body regain a natural balance of hormones after using birth control
pills. According to a report in the March 2005 issue of Parasitological
Research, a vitex-based spray is effective for warding off ticks,
mosquitoes, and fleas as well. Several studies also indicate vitex can
help control acne in the teenage years.More........

OT - Another exercise question Eva 12:13:17
When they say you should attempt to walk 10,000 steps every day, does a
"step" mean one leg, or two? IOW, if my legs move as follows: right, left,
right, left, have I taken *four* steps, or *two*?

I counted my steps today as I walked a mile, or maybe a little more.
Counting a step each time I moved a leg, I walked 3,640 steps. Counting the
other way, I walked 1,820 steps. Which is correct?

Thanx Eva

Yes, you're right it would. I keep it down because Sabina, my first cat,> managed to fall in a couple of times back in the 70's: she leapt up onto the> seat lid only to discover herself in the bowl instead. I think it looks tidier, too. It's also good feng shui.
Possible... "Altered state" before and during period Guest 21:04:56
I am 42 and this has been going on since I was in my 20s. My mind goes
into what I can only describe as a trance-like state. When this
happens, I get very hot and then extremely nauseated. It lasts for
about 40 seconds and when it passes, I feel great. It only happens
either just before or during my period. Incidentally, when I was
pregnant, it didn't happen at all. Can anyone explain this?

OT: The cats on 7 August 2006 >^,,^< Amethyst 00:41:16
Things are going well. Max has no sign of a limp or other problem, so
I've let him out of the bedroom. Silver is out of his room, and Fluffy
is happy to be able to sleep with me again.

End of cat stuff, read the rest at your own risk.

What do I do for amusement? Ponder human reactions. I have a co-worker
who is a good friend as well as a devout Catholic. She knows all about
my wishy-washy Unitarian Universalist Neo-Paganism spirituality that
has nonetheless kept me sober 22 years. So she asked me to wear
something called "The Green Scapular". So I do, as a matter of
courtesy.

OF COURSE I went out on the internet to do research., and found no
problem. I wear this scapular, she recites a specific prayer for me
every day, and we remain good friends. It seems the courtious thing to
do. No problem.

Well, I called my ex-landlady yeesterday on some other topic, but
knowing she was a lapsed Catholic, I did mention the scapular. She hit
the cealing, told me to take off the scapular, and demanded that I read
some books she was going to send me. She is a Jehovah Witness nowadays,
and I guess she assumed the worst, whatever that is. The books will
probably arrive later this week. (You know what kind of people they
have working for the Post Office nowadays.)

Even stranger was the reaction of some Protestent friends at my AA
meetings, who regarded the scapular as a base superstition that allowed
you to sin all you want and still go to heaven. I have my doubts about
that <G>.

Even a couple of my Catholic AA freinds denyed wearing a scapular. As I
said, I did some research, and noted that most of the scapulars had a
requirement for observing chastity. My cynicism is kicking in at this
point.

Experiment suggests slow breathing helps break down the salt we eat

OT --- The cats on 30 July 2006, 10 AM >^..^< Amethyst 01:29:01
My Brother, Michel Andruschak, noted that Max was showing his age. Max
is a 13 year old male Maine Coon, a breed noted for joint problems as
they age. This morning Max seem to be having trouble walking a straight
line. A couple of times he toppled over on his right side. He seems to
be unable to leap at all.

He has taken to hunkering down in the cat condo in my bedroom. To
prevent his being hasseled by Silver and/or Fluffy, I have closed the
doors to the two bedrooms. Fluffy and Silver have the kitchen, living
room, 3 litter boxes, and 2 sets of food/water trays. I have the third
set of food/water dishes in my bedroom, next to the cat condo. I also
brought in one litter box, and am in the process of scrubbing down and
cleaning another one, to also go into my bedroom. (This leaves 3 litter
boxes in the second bedroom.)

There are emergency clinics around, of course, but they tend to be
expensive. But Affordable Animal Clinic, which is my preferred
provider, will open at 6 PM tonight. My brother accused me of having
spending money. Not quite. But I do have a credit card now, from
Juniper Bank, which I try to use for dire emergencies only. I think
this situation qualifies.
From now until 6 PM, I will scrub out a couple more litter boxes and
try not to worry too much.

This posting may also qualify as a CEPT Request for The Place

OT - Question about calories Eva 06:32:17
I asked two registered dietitians at work this question, and neither could
give me a definitive answer. Does anyone here know for sure?

Let's say I walk a mile on Monday, and it takes me 20 minutes. On Tuesday I
walk a mile also, but it's a very hot day and it takes me 40 minutes because
I have to go slowly and make a rest stop in the middle. Did I burn the same
number of calories each day? Or did I waste my time going out on Tuesday?
I'm not walking for "fitness," strictly to try and keep my weight under
control.

(And it's 100 degrees here in NYC, and I'm forcing myself to go out and walk
when the sun goes down, but essentially all I'm doing is putting one foot in
front of the other at a turtle's pace.)

Thanx Eva

Twitchy muscle Priscilla H. Ballou 01:36:56
I've got an odd thing going on right now. A muscle underneath my eye
(underneath as towards my chin rather than towards my brain) keeps going
into little spasms. It'll stop for a while and then start up. I can't
correlate it to anything. It was happening Monday as well, but not
yesterday.

I have been under some stress lately, so it could be tied to that, but
I've been under stress off and on for a while without getting a twitchy
under eye.

Has anyone else had this and found out what it was about?

Thanks!

Priscilla
