| Blaine Jelus? Steve 02:32:59 |
| | I thought I recognized Blaine Jelus from "Blaine's Low Carb Kitchen" on last night's episode of Law and Order:CI. He was playing an incestuous, child-molesting chef of all things Anyway, if that _was_ him, he's gained it all back. Might explain why Food Network didn't renew his contract.

| Beware McDonald's burger patties! Guest 21:59:29 |
| | Not content to kill you with their fries or the buns they serve the burgers on, McDonalds adds hydrogenated fats to the meat itself, in the form of their "grill seasoning." The 1/4 pound patty on the Quarter Pounder and Big & Tasty contains A WHOLE GRAM of the killer Franklenstein fats. That's on top of 7 g of saturated fat. Is this premeditated murder, or a lesser crime, like negligent homicide? All those times I ordered their burgers "no bun." I had no idea. Bastards. Go check it out on their website, then tell the whole world. http://app.mcdonalds.com/bagamcmeal?process=item&itemID=6

Also saw the article in First magazine and was tempted to buy the product. I will if anyone has tried it and gotten real results.

| TV Show "Taking it off" Brian 17:16:44 |
| | I've only seen one episode of this so far, but it looks much friendlier than "The Biggest Loser". No elimination, just two teams from different cities trying to see who can come closest to their goals, which seem to include weight, plus running and swimming times. I like that much better than just seeing who can lose the most weight.
Now the big question... I only saw one episode and set my PVR to record it the next week, but it wasn't on at the same time. They seem to be repeating old episodes and the official web site just says "coming soon". Hopefully they will show some more new episodes.

I don't know if this is showing on any US channels, maybe someone can check and see.

| Atkins Diet book from 1972 Miss Jaime 17:50:41 |
| | I was going through my books today to thin them out. I'm moving in with the DBF soon and due to space at our new place I cannot take them all. I have a Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book from 1972 to give away if anyone is interested and does not mind a wee bit of writing in the book.
I know it is out of date as far as DANDR goes but it might be of interest to someone just for the fun of reading. It also has some recipes in it.
I can mail it to whomever wants it, free of charge, at the end of this month. Email me and let me know. I thought I would ask here first before hitting the Freecycle groups. Jaime

| Carb Cycling ~*~Gwendolyn~*~ 12:36:30 |
| | Hi, I read all the posts in the "to all the readers of dan duchaine body opus" and this isn't about that...I think. In the latest Women's World mag there is an article about carb cycling. It's not as complicated as what I had read in those posts and it isn't CKD or TKD or whatever that is. It says it's as simple as eating 60 carbs on low days and 140 on high days. And you just alternate days like that. I just wondered if anyone else has experience doing simple carb cycling. (However, to me, 60 seems like a high carb day.) And it encourages things like fruit, or starchy veggies like a potato or whole wheat pasta on high days. I won't have a problem on the low days, but I wonder if forcing myself to eat carbs on the high days will really result in the fast weight loss the article promises. AND it said that carb cycling encourages more FAT loss. (well low carb encourages fat loss over muscle anyway). One thing I noticed is that the high carb day seems to be low fat and I'm not used to eating low fat, but would that be important to do on the high carb days? Example Low carb day High Carb Day 4 egg whites 1 c fruit 1 tsp oil 1 cup whole grain cereal 2 oz cheese 3/4 c ff milk 1 c strawberries
7 oz tuna 2 oz chicken or tuna 2 c mixed salad 3 c mixed salad 2 tbs dressing 3 tbs lcarb dressing 1 med potato or sweet potato 1 tbs sour cream
4 oz steak 1 c low fat chili w/out beans 12 aparagus spears 2 tbs sour cream 1 oz blue cheese 1 ear corn 2 cups bell pepper rings
I used my FitDay software and the low day is around 60 carbs. And the high day is around 140 (don't remember the fiber carbs for either days though)
Anyway, I'm starting today. I am not really doing a menu on the low days, but can a day be too low? My carbs for today will be less than 20. (I'm starting with the low carb day) But tomorrow I will try to get up around 100. (I really don't feel I can eat 140 carbs) I intend to eat more fruit than starchy veggies because if I have to eat low fat on the high carb days I can't do that eating something like an ear of corn or a potato.

| The tonsillitis diet Ignoramus10474 22:57:28 |
| | What a great way to lose weight. I have tonsillitis (quinsy) right now and swallowing is very painful. Food does not interest me in the least and in the last 2 days, and also today, I have no interest in eating so far. Ate maybe 1/4 of my normal food quantity.

| Anybody tried www.weightloss4idiots.com? Mario Arnaldo 23:56:54 |
| | Back in Oct 2004, someone asked if anybody has tried this $27 dollar subscription to a diet/weightloss program. Nobody answered. I thought I would try to ask also.
I am also interested in feedback before I spend $27.
Basically, the program tells you to change when you eat and what you eat to "fake out" your default body metabolism.
It sounds too good to be true to lose 9 lbs in 11 days, take a 3-4 day break, then go for another 9 lbs loss.
When the programs are too good to be true, Murphy's Law says it's probably not true.
Anybody out there?
Thanks,
Mario

| Fistula troubles: painful and won't seem to go away :( Guest 20:58:18 |
| | I've had 3 Fistula surgeries in the last year now, and nothing seems to work in closing these things up
They first went in surgically to "drain" out the mucus collecting inside the cheeks of my butt, they put a "drain" in and a Seeton Wire in, to help the Fistulas to drain.
it was working fine, until the doctor took the "seeton wire" out, then the holes on the outside started to heal up, and mucus started to collect inside my butt cheeks again
so then, he did another surgery called a "Flap", where they take some of the other skin and attempt to "Flap" it over the hole inside,
again, didn't work, don't know if the stitches came out, or what happened, but it didn't work
so now, they want to put me on "remicade" which I'm a little scared about. Not real sure whats going to happen.
I've been on SCD for the last 3 years, and its helped my Crohns disease so much, but yet I still have these Fistulas on the inside I guess.
I'm just not sure what to do at this point. Remicade is "expensive" and I'm not even sure if thats going to work or not.
anyone out there have any success getting Fistulas to close? and if so, what did you do?
I don't know if stronger antibiotics is the answer, remicade, or something else,
all I know is, I've been in "terrible" pain from these things, from the mucus collecting inside the butt cheeks, I'm pretty much despirate now, I don't know if a Colostomy bag is the answer, or remicade, or what,
any ideas would be greatly appreciated
thanks,
Tom Coburn Crohns: 9 years now SCD: 3 years with improvement but still Fistulas problems

| Canola Oil contains trans fat? Trader4@Optonline.Net 03:15:29 |
| | While reading the March issue of Low Carb Energy magazine, I came across an article by Dr. Fred Pescatore regarding common myths about fat. According to him, canola oil is the most unhealthful oil on the market because it contains from 5 to 15 percent trans fat right out of the bottle. This, if true, is quite a shock! He says the trans fats are generated from the processing of the rapeseed to make it into canola oil.
I looked at a bottle of Wesson canola oil and like most products, it doesn't say anything specifically about trans fat content. On the other hand a bottle of the local supermarket house brand canola oil says it has no trans fats. So, apparently there is some disagreement here.
Searching the web, I found some links that at least partially support the Dr's claim:
http://www.tfx.org.uk/page13.html
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/media/releases/2004/trans_fats-gras_e.html
The second website says processed vegetable oils in general, including soybean oil and canola oil, contain up to 2.5% trans fat. Of course that's still a long way from the 5 to 15% claimed in the magazine article. Most other health websites endorse canola oil as one of the better oils and say nothing negative about it.
Anyone else ever hear this or have any more info?

| Question about loose skin and Copper peptides Seb Bornouf 18:51:11 |
| | Hi,
i was introduced to the low carb diet by a friend of mine who lost 150lbs on Atkins. He looks great but has extra skin on his stomach. I have been reading the archives about loose skin and copper peptides, specifically from skin biology, have been mentioned. Has anyone tried them with success? I would like to start applying lotion on my skin now instead of waiting until i have lost all my weight. Has anyone tried anything else that works except surgery? I am 27 year old male. i would hate to win one battle (weight loss) and then have to conquer another one (loose skin). Thanks a lot.

| Metabolic advantage? Lowcarb 0 Automata 18:39:53 |
| | I read a post that claims the metabolic advantage does not exist because calories burned to process fats and proteins are taking into account for nutritional labels. Is this true? And does this factor in the conversion rates for fat and protein into glucose? I read that fat conversion rate is 10% and protein has a 58% or 59% conversion rate into glucose.
