ELLICOTT CITY, Md. -- Three Howard High School students were caught with drug-filled gumballs and have been charged, police said, and more of the gumballs have been discovered in Virginia.
The gumballs are called "greenades." They're stuffed with a greenish brown substance, which forensic experts said is marijuana, and they come professionally wrapped.
Officials from the Maryland State Police forensic lab said they have never seen anything like them, News4's Cheryl Butler reported. The lab recently received the two yellow gumballs, each with a smiley face printed on the side and filled with marijuana.
"There was actual marijuana inside the gumballs," said Sherry Llewellyn of the Howard County Police Department. "It looked like someone had drilled a hole in the back of the gumball and put the marijuana leaves inside."
The gumballs were confiscated at Howard High School in January, but the lab results have just been released.
"This really began with a teacher notifying one of our Howard County police officers stationed at the school that she had seen students exchanging a baggie," Llewellyn said. "It looked suspicious to her. When our officer investigated, she found it was two gumballs stuffed with marijuana."
Two students were charged with drug distribution and suspended from school for at least 45 days. One student was charged with drug possession and suspended for at least 10 days.
"I think this demonstrates to us the lengths kids will go to conceal illegal drugs," Llewellyn said.
School officials said they've never seen the gumball greenades on school property before, but they're prepared to crack down hard on offenders.
"The teacher and resource officer in Howard High School acted quickly and in accordance to how we want people to respond," said Patti Caplan of Howard County Schools. "We don't want drugs in our schools."
Officials said the gumballs came prepackaged in a shiny tinfoil wrapper labeled "greenades" with a tiny marijuana leaf and instructions for use printed there, too. Parents in Howard County said they're concerned the packaging may be alluring.
"It concerns me that the children have the marijuana in the gumballs," Kathy Ecklund said. "It seems to be getting in the schools one way or another."
Howard County police said each gumball contained about one gram of marijuana. The state forensic lab has not determined if the level of THC in the gumballs is lethal, but authorities warned parents to stay on the lookout because the gumballs are dangerous if ingested by kids.
On Saturday, Paul C. Cofer Jr. was arrested and charged with drug possession. Police said he had hundreds of the gumballs with the tops cut off in his apartment.
Anyone with information about the distribution of the gumballs should call the Arlington vice center at 703-228-4111.

And it's a gumball for gosh sakes! What happens when you chew the thing? The pot gets mixed in with the gum so that you're chewing on a crunchy mess. Then what? Is anyone going to swallow that clump and get a buzz off of it? -- Juba www.masterjuba.com

| medstaff staying 4 Katrina arrested 4 murder OldGoat 03:56:42 |
| | Hi Folks,
This should outrage everyone. It shows how little the law cares for patients, pain or suffering. Where were they when these medical folks were treating patients in 10 feet of water? Looting the local Walmart, that's where!
There should be a law against this--og
Many see accused New Orleans MD as hero By MICHELLE ROBERTS, Associated Press WriterSun Jul 23, 1:45 AM ET
To Louisiana's attorney general, the doctor and two nurses arrested this past week are murderers. But many in the medical community are outraged at the arrests, saying the three caregivers are heroes who faced unimaginable horrors as Hurricane Katrina flooded the city and trapped them and their patients.
Dr. Anna Pou and nurses Cheri Landry and Lori Budo were accused of being principals to second-degree murder in the deaths of four patients at Memorial Medical Center three days after Katrina hit. The charge carries a mandatory life sentence, though the state will turn the case over to the New Orleans prosecutor, who will decide whether to ask a grand jury to bring charges.
Pou, Landry and Budo are accused of killing four patients, ages 61 to 90, with morphine and a powerful sedative called Versed.
Dr. Ben deBoisblanc, director of critical care at Charity Hospital, said he and others are angry at the accusations against a doctor and nurses who risked their own safety, and provided care in a chaotic and frightening situation.
"This doctor and these nurses were heroes. They stayed behind of their own volition to care for desperately ill people. They had an opportunity to leave and chose not to," he said.
Memorial Medical was swamped with 10 feet of water and isolated by Katrina's flooding. The 317-bed hospital had no electricity and the temperature inside rose over 100 degrees as the staff tried to tend to patients who waited four days to be evacuated.
Attorneys for the trio say they are innocent. DeBoisblanc and others fear the accusations may discourage other health professionals.
"We have people who are volunteering their services and putting their lives on the line. It's going to make it less likely they'll do that in the future," said Dr. Peter deBlieux, an emergency room and intensive care doctor who stayed at Charity Hospital during Katrina.
DeBoisblanc said it's also likely to make doctors less eager to return as the city tries to recover from the hurricane.
"If you think that going after physicians and nurses while hardened criminals are ruling this town, if you think that's an image that's going to bring people back, you've got to be kidding yourself," he said, noting the recent rash of violent crime in New Orleans.
Kris Wartelle, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office, said the agency had to investigate the claims at Memorial because it must enforce the law.
"Where is the sympathy for the victims? Why is there no outcry for the people who would have not died had they gotten out?" she said. "These are not terminal people begging to be put out of their misery."
Pou, Landry and Budo were the first medical professionals charged in a monthslong criminal investigation into whether many of New Orleans' sick and elderly were abandoned or put out of their misery in the days after the storm.
"This case is not over yet," said Louisiana Attorney General Charles C. Foti.
Hundreds of people were stranded in the hospital with no power to run lights or elevators and no running water. Anyone willing to carry a gun was deputized to watch the entrances as people broke into nearby buildings.
"We had no communication floor to floor, much less to the outside world. We were surrounded by water. It was hotter than Hades," said Dr. Gregory Vorhoff, who was at Memorial after the storm but left to seek help before the alleged killings. "It was as bad as you can imagine."
Under such conditions, even patients who might have been able to walk or were relatively stable before Katrina could easily have lapsed into critical condition, doctors say.
"It's very easy for a relatively healthy person to go down quickly," said Dr. Daniel Nuss, Pou's department head at Louisiana State University, where Pou has given up clinical duties until the case is resolved.
He and other doctors said the morphine and Versed that investigators found in the patients' bodies are commonly given to relieve suffering and anxiety.
"If you didn't find sedatives and analgesics in these people, I would think that was inhumane," deBoisblanc said. "The very fact that you found these drugs means nothing."

| Practicing Medicine Zuska 23:24:31 |
| | What a day this has been ~ not sure if it will end up as a good one or not. Time will tell.
For three months, I have become progressively weak, to the point that I now cannot walk without either crutches or a walker. In June I began medical leave from work, and the doctors (lots of them!) have been trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
The first official 'guess' was CIDP. That lead to an EMG with NCS. The results of that were nor normal, but it was determined that I do not have CIPD, and instead probably have Multifocal Motor Neuropathy. To determine if that was correct, I had to have genetic testing, and wait five weeks for the results.
Today I went to see a new neurologist, who specializes in MMN, and he says that is not it. His 'guess' is a muscle wasting disease, such as Myasthenia Gravis. He ordered more blood tests, and a consult with yet another neurologist, who specializes in muscle wasting diseases.
Since I have had ALOT of time to think, I have been trying to figure out what the heck is going on, and the only "change" in my life about the time that this 'hit the fan' was that I started taking Plaquanil ... so I asked if this might be connected. His response was that it was an excellent question, and that he would talk with my Rheumatologist.
About two hours later, my Rheumatologist called, told me she had a wonderful conversation with the Neurologist and that he was thinking this might be a reaction to the Plaquanil. She suggested that I stop taking it and see what happens, because otherwise, the next step is a muscle biopsy, and if we can figure out what is happening without all these invasive tests, that would be a good thing. I agreed, and as of this evening, I am no longer taking Plaquanil. I will see the Rheumatologist on 8/1/06 and the new Neurologist on 8/9/06.
Now ~ mind you I am not angry that this possibility was thought of by me, and the Rheumatologist was thinking that it was a recommendation from the Neurologist. What I am beside myself about is that all of this could have been avoided if the Rheumatologist's staff had listened to me back in April when I was beginning to have problems, and was unable to get through to her!
As a result of all this, I am on medical leave from my job. My job is only protected until the day after Labor day, if it is the Plaquanil ~ although I will regain use of my arms and legs, it is going to take physical therapy for months to regain what I have lost in muscle mass and strength. And, as I have worked very hard mentally and emotionally to accept that I would not be able to return to work, now this is up in the air!
Oh ~ obviously the issue of pain is back, since the Plaquanil was helping with that!
So, here I sit, with nothing to do but wonder what is going on ... should I go ahead with applying for Social Security disability, should I let my work know that maybe I will be back, how do I get emotionally ready for both possibilities at the same time ~ or how do I find a way to live in this 'gray area' until something is decided.
Anyway ~ that was my day ... hope everyone else had a better one!
Susan

| More Problems & Two Questions Ronnie 21:33:52 |
| | In process of getting second opinion on the operation on my neck and back this I hope will be resolved next month. Now two questions: I had a bone density test done and have severe Osteoporosis in lower back and left hip. Was placed on Fosamax (just took first last Friday) how long before relief if you have taken it? Also had upper GI and have slow swallowing reflex that causes me not to be able to swallow after I swallow the first time. I panic sometimes because I feel like I am choking. Small bites and/or liquid diet and is there anything else that can help with this?

| lower back pain numbness in finger? Monty 03:47:29 |
| | This may be totally unrelated but I have to ask. I had to have a laminectomy in 2003. Everything was fine until my back "went out" again three weeks ago. I had an MRI and it show two herniated disks and post operative scaring. The pain is in the lower left side of my back. I am still in a lot of pain but better than I was. This past weekend I noticed that my pinky finger on my left hand was numb and it still is. It sounds strange but is it possibly related to my back problem?

| S.D. urged to take stand on medical pot Juba 21:46:07 |
| | The headline should read, "Chronic Pain patients and the terminally ill continue to suffer while the San Diego City Council stands aside so that the DA can test the legality of marijuana dispensaries in the courts"
OK, so that's a little long for a headline, but that is what's going on here.
Council puts off immediate action
By Craig Gustafson STAFF WRITER SD Union
July 26, 2006
With medical marijuana dispensaries under mounting pressure from law enforcement agencies, supporters have urged the San Diego City Council to call for a halt to federal raids, and to regulate the shops through local authorities.
But city officials, already saddled with a pension crisis and numerous financial problems, didn't appear too thrilled to tackle the issue.
Nearly 70 supporters packed the council chambers yesterday, giving council members a brief two-minute plea to help keep dispensaries open so those with painful ailments wouldn't suffer needlessly.
Local law enforcement agencies and federal drug agents raided some marijuana dispensaries July 7 and made 15 arrests. On Friday, federal agents visited 10 shops and warned operators that they are operating illegally.
Supporters of medical marijuana asked the council to pass a resolution that would prohibit local authorities from assisting federal agencies in the arrest or prosecution of patients or dispensary operators. They also want the council to develop regulations to provide seriously ill patients safe and legal access to marijuana.
Council President Scott Peters, who has supported the use of medicinal marijuana, said he would need to seek input from Mayor Jerry Sanders and the Police Department before deciding whether to put the proposed resolution up for a vote. He also said the council's schedule is full until September and no immediate action could be taken.
The mayor's spokesman, Fred Sainz, said Sanders supports medicinal marijuana but hasn't studied the issue of regulating dispensaries.
State voters approved the use of medicinal marijuana with a doctor's recommendation 10 years ago, and follow-up legislation in 2004 tried to provide mechanisms for distribution. State law, however, leaves it up to local municipalities to regulate distribution.
Many have interpreted the state law as providing for dispensaries, but the San Diego County District Attorney's Office views them as illegal.
Under federal law, marijuana is illegal under any circumstance.
County supervisors sued the state of California this year to try to overturn the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 and the bill permitting retail sales to qualified patients. The case is pending.
City Councilman Jim Madaffer said there's no need for the city to take any action until the case is resolved.
"Until there's clarity between state and federal (laws), I think any city laws are pointless and perhaps placing the city at potential risk," he said.
Ron Little, a Point Loma retiree who uses marijuana to alleviate osteoarthritis, said it's disappointing that officials are playing politics when science clearly shows the benefits of medicinal marijuana.
"This is clearly part of the cultural divide that's been fought on a number of issues," he said.

| New Pain Drug approved Legend 09:26:31 |
| | I just heard from the American Pain Foundation's newsletter that a new drug for moderate to severe pain, manufactured by Endo Pharmaceuticals and to be sold under the name Opana, has received FDA approval, and could be available within a few weeks.
The active ingredient is called oxymorphone (or oxymorphine-different sites spell it differently). It will be available in both extended and instant relief formulas. Here is the "Web MD" link to some info on it:
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/124/115549.htm
I don't know how it is supposed to differ from similar drugs. When I googled it, there weren't too many reliable-looking sites (That should change soon). it's considered an opiod narcotic; both will be classified under schedule II. The extended release pills will be available in several doses, the weakest being 10 mg. and the strongest, 40. The instant release will be available in 5 and 10 mg pills, although the prescribing info says that some people may require as much as 20.
As I understood it, Oxymorphone was not avalable in pill form before, and its use was mainly limited to in-hospital care.
Here's hoping that this new form will help some people here-or Chronic Painers somewhere.

| chronic hip pain Colugo 08:20:33 |
| | Hi, I'm an 18 year old high school student who has had chronic hip pain for at least 3 years. It is a sharp pain on the outside of the hips, sometimes it runs down through my thighs to just above my knee. It is extremely difficult to get up after laying down. It affects both hips, but one is usually more painful than the other at any given time. I dont know if I am compensating for one hip and making the other worse or if something else is happening. Sometimes I experience a "clicking", especially when just sitting or laying down or getting up from a sitting or laying position. There is no swelling or tenderness, and it not painful to touch or press the area. The pain sometimes leaves for a couple weeks or even a month or two at a time but it always comes back. Even walking is a chore, I have to limp around and running is extremely painful (I dont even want to know how it looks when I try). I am in good shape(5' 10", 140lbs.) so obesity is not a factor. I used to play soccer which is where the pain developed so I had to quit. I currently am on the tennis and swim teams. After the swim season the pain subsided(I dont know if this is a coincidence or not), but has since returned after the tennis season. I have gone to 4 or more doctors all with a different diagnosis, ranging from a stress fracture to bursitis and arthritis. I have also done physical therapy. Any input would be greatly appreciated, because frankly im tired of dealing with it at my age. If you have any further questions just leave a post. Thanks, Steve
