| Recall Guest 04:28:35 |
| | Recall -- Firm Press Release FDA posts press releases and other notices of recalls and market withdrawals from the firms involved as a service to consumers, the media, and other interested parties. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company.
Roxane Laboratories Initiates a Nationwide Voluntary Recall of a Single Manufacturing Lot of Azathioprine Tablets in the U.S. and Puerto Rico Contact: Roxane Laboratories 800-962-8364
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Columbus, Ohio -- July 13, 2006 -- Roxane Laboratories, Inc., announced today that it is conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of a single manufacturing lot of Azathioprine tablets, USP 50 mg, (NDC 00054-4084-25, Lot 558470A, Exp Mar 2009). Azathioprine is used to help prevent rejection in kidney transplant patients, and can also be used to manage severe rheumatoid arthritis.
It was discovered that a single bottle of Azathioprine tablets from lot 558470A contained Methotrexate tablets USP 2.5 mg. While we believe this issue may be limited to this single bottle, which was not dispensed to a patient, the decision was made to recall manufacturing lot 558470A in order to preclude any possibility of another such bottle being dispensed or used.
Roxane Laboratories' number one priority is for the safety of patients who use our products. Due to the potentially serious or life-threatening health affects that could occur if patients ingest the incorrect medication, Roxane Laboratories is voluntarily recalling the single manufacturing lot of Azathioprine tablets. If Methotrexate 2.5 mg tablets are taken in place of Azathioprine 50 mg tablets in accordance with dosing instructions that may be prescribed for Azathioprine, serious toxic effects may occur. Effects may include decreased resistance to infection, mouth ulcers, reduced blood counts, vomiting, diarrhea, liver, kidney or lung injury. There have also been reports of death at high doses of Methotrexate, such as might result from a substitution of Methotrexate 2.5 mg tablets for Azathioprine 50 mg tablets.
Information has been sent to Pharmacists alerting them of the details pertaining to this recall. As described in these recall communications, pharmacists who may have dispensed Azathioprine tablets to patients from manufacturing lot 558470A are instructed to contact those patients to assure they did not inadvertently receive Methotrexate tablets.
ADVICE FOR PATIENTS TAKING AZATHIOPRINE TABLETS:
If you have been notified by your pharmacist that you may have received medication from this recalled lot, please return your Azathioprine to your pharmacist.
If you have NOT been notified by your pharmacist, then please take the following steps to verify that you have not received Methotrexate tablets in your Azathioprine prescription:
Visually inspect your Azathioprine tablets. DO NOT TAKE Azathioprine tablets marked with number 54 323. If you have Azathioprine tablets marked with number 54 323 immediately contact your pharmacist or physician. Patients are advised to contact their pharmacist or physician if they have any questions about their prescription or medication. Requests for additional information should be referred to Roxane Laboratories Technical Product Information at 800-962-8364. Roxane Laboratories is working with the US FDA on this voluntary recall. The products discussed in this press release are available by prescription only, and to date no injuries have been reported in relation to this issue.
Pharmacists and wholesalers that have any bottles of Azathioprine manufacturing lot 558470A have been instructed to discontinue distribution and use of this lot immediately and contact Capital Returns at 800-950-5479 (menu option 1) for any questions regarding the recall returns. Requests for additional information should be referred to Roxane Laboratories Technical Product Information at 800-962-8364.

| Any thoughts on my situation? Guest 04:10:45 |
| | Two weeks ago I had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. I had these done because I have been having episodes of diarrhea on and off for the past six months, it all started when my GP gave me a "Z pack" antibiotic for an infection.
I spoke to the doctor last week about the results and everything is fine. They didn't find a thing for which I am happy but he has no idea why I am having these episodes of diarrhea. I am diabetic, type II; he thinks this may be the cause. I don't think that's the reason; I can't say why but I just don't think it's the reason.
I have stomach pain and generally one dose of Imodium will check the problem for 24 hours. I stopped eating all dairy products and don't eat much bread or wheat products.
Anyone have any ideas or similar problems? The doctor I saw is written up as one of the best gastroenterologist in the Washington DC metro area so I don't know who to turn to.
Thanks for any and all thoughts, help, suggestions.

| | VERY GOOD WARNING, Paul! Thank you for sharing. I'm sorry you've lost sight due to glaucoma. I've been much more fortunate, whilst I do have glaucoma we've caught it relatively early w/not too much vision field damage and for these past 5 controlled very well w/one drop of Xalatan nightly in that eye. The other eye is doing well so far w/o the need for drops but we do do a pressure check every 3 months on both eyes
Forgive me for chuckling a bit about your Xalatan side effect. I'm female and despite the caution about thickening of the eye lashes the Xalatan has thinned and shortened mine. What it has also done is given me the discolored eye lids so all around my eyes is constantly red. If you think THAT doesn't make for some interesting photos!!!!!!

| | Back when they were working on the Voyager Space Probes, the ones that are designed to wander on out of the Solar System and be found by anyone who might be out there, with all the stuff on them about who we are and where to find us, someone decided that some music should be added, as an indicator of our "aesthetic" advancement.
Of course, this lead to a large debate about exactly what should be included, and eventually, it was suggested to Carl Sagan, that they should send some Bach.
Carl thought for a moment, then shook his head and said, "No, we don't want to show off."

| telephone support group Tom Robinson 06:01:39 |
| | Hi,
I have CD and used to hang around and post to this newsgroup back in the late '90s. I had a couple of Remicade treatments in 2000, with miraculous results: I had a four-year remission. Some symtoms have returned and I have a new one as well: a fistula. But my relatively mild symtoms don't keep me from doing what I want.
The reason I'm writing is because I'm now a life coach who specializes in working with people with chronic illnesses. Besides coaching individuals, I hold telephone support groups, for which I charge a nominal amount. But I have a group starting this Monday that has a couple of openings and I'd like to fill them so I'm making them available at no cost (except for your own long distance phone charges). There will be a maximum of eight people in the group. It will meet from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM PDT on the following Mondays: 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/14, 8/28, 9/11. If you are interested, please send me an email. You can find out more about me at my website (below) and more about the coaching groups at http://www.chronicillnesscoach.com/coaching_description1.html#group_coaching_description.

| Pain Relief Tigress 01:16:19 |
| | I'm about fed up with my doctor. For many months, he's understood that I have a very bad auto-immune system, having Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, fibromyalgia (I used to think it didn't exist, until I ended up with it -- karma bit me in the backside), and I inherited from my mother osteoarthritis (in my knees). My mother had tuberculosis, both bovine and in her lungs, so it's no surprise I ended up with Crohn's and a host of other auto-immune problems.
Why am I fed up with my doctor? Two words: PAIN RELIEF. He used to write me prescriptions for Tylenol #3 because it's the ONLY thing that helps the pain and trotting to the loo several times a day. He then added Darvocet, because it gave me a way to switch off and not get too used to the T#3.
Suddenly, for reasons unknown to his staff (nurses and office staff alike), he will no longer write me these prescriptions. I have made it clear to him that I am NOT an addict (when I ran out of T#3 and such I had no withdrawl symptoms whatsoever), and my sister the Registered Nurse can back that up. But, he's not happy anymore writing anything to help my pain, even though he's a hospice specilalist, and I've had to beg for 9 days -- while having a flare-up during that time, before he'd write one more 'script for T#2 or #3.
Does *anyone* know of a doctor who is reasonably priced (I just had to file for backruptcy chapter 7 because of medical bills), and who is willing to keep his or her patients out of undue pain? I am in the Burbank/Glendale area and would like to stay in the San Fernando Valley for medical care, because sometimes a simple cold turns into a sinus infection emergency almost overnight, since my auto-immune system is so blown out.
Or, conversely, are there places where you can still purchase 8mg. of codeine with Tylenol online -- that don't cost a fortune. Canada Over the Counter went out of business, as far as I can tell, and I used to do business with them because my *previous* doctor didn't believe in pain medications.
If anyone has any advice or a good doctor that won't require a lot of expensive tests first, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your consideration. -- Tigress <<catfanceee@aol.com>>

| WARNING: Sales Troll Guest 07:18:14 |
| | [blah blah blah] a whole lot better then useing immodium.> Warning: Ken is a sales troll. He is pushing a line of supplements for a pyramid scheme. He has a single sales gimmick: Say that ALL DRUGS ARE BAD, and that only his merchandise is good. He will tell you that, regardless of the disease, regardless of the patient, regardless of anything.
He has gone so far as to post:
"Drugs are bad whether they are prescribed, bought over the counter, or from the local pusher on the street."
So when he says something is "a whole lot better" than Immodium, for instance, be skeptical.
Here's more:
KEN WARD FAQ v2.4
Now updated to include: --Ken's line of "beauty products" (hand lotions, basically)
--Ray Strand's religious agenda
--More dangers of Ken's supplements for folks with IBD.
KEN WARD FAQ v2.4
WHO IS KEN WARD?
Ken WARD is a poster who claims to have Crohn's disease and to have controlled it by stopping all medications and instead taking supplements made by a corporation called USANA. Ken moonlights as a salesman for that corporation.
(It's a sideline job; Ken's main job is working in a warehouse, carrying boxes back and forth. This gives you some idea of Ken's scientific background.)
USANA has been called by some a "pyramid scheme." In a pyramid scheme, the success of the company depends mostly on recruiting more and more salesmen, rather than on actually selling the corporation's merchandise.
USANA itself admits that ***85 percent *** of its merchandise sales are between one salesman and another.
******************* WHAT IS KEN'S SALES GIMMICK?
As part of Ken's campaign to sell USANA merchandise, he frequently tries to encourage people in the newsgroup to stop taking medications and instead substitute his products. A few sample posts of his [spelling, punctuation, and capitalization are, sadly, Ken's]:
"Instead of sticking with the meds i took the recommendation out there to supplement my nourishment that will help me generate healthy cells and to help keep them healthy. It has worked wonders for me!"
"If one can do with out them [medications], the better off he is in the
long run."
"The meds we are using for IBD are not going to cure us....Why not try somethin that is much much safer?"
"My having not had to take any med's for the last 10 years for my crohn's disease speaks oodles."
"I went against the doctors advice when i did the nutrition route...cause i was going to be building up my immune system instead of
suppressing it.That immune system theory of suppressing it is old medicine."
"Drugs are bad whether they are prescribed, bought over the counter, or
from the local pusher on the street."
*************************** KEN'S PYRAMID SCHEME IS CALLED USANA "HEALTH SCIENCES." IS IT A "SCIENTIFIC" COMPANY?
No. Ken is basically a hand-lotion salesman who also pushes supplements.
Some of the products that USANA sells under its hilariously named "SensГ©" line (and that Ken is too embarrassed to talk about) are:
Gentle Daily Cleanser Hydrating Toner Daytime Protective Emulsion Night Renewal Rice Bran Polisher Perfecting Essence Serum Intensive Eye Nourisher
SensГ© Splash Energizing Shower Gel Revitalizing Shampoo Nourishing Conditioner Firming Body Nourisher Intensive Hand Therapy
****************************** CAN I USE KEN'S MERCHANDISE AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR MEDICATION, AS HE RECOMMENDS?
Ken's merchandise is not appropriate for many people with IBD. For instance:
His products provide vitamins A, D, and E in FAT-soluble form. But people with small-bowel Crohn's (e.g., Crohn's in the terminal ileum) often have trouble digesting fat. In these people, fats--along with those fat-associated vitamins--end up UNabsorbed and in the toilet.
People with small-intestinal Crohn's should therefore find a product in which vitamins A, D, and E are present in WATER-soluble forms (also sometimes called water-MISCIBLE). These products are not hard to find.
As for the USANA fiber supplement that Ken sells (called "Fibergy"): USANA brags that this product contains INSOLUBLE fiber. This is fiber that cannot dissolve in water. Such fiber can be very rough on raw, ulcerated, bleeding gut tissue. It can also have a very hard time getting through a narrow intestinal stricture.
Too much insoluble fiber is a common cause of the bowel obstructions that occur in people with Crohn's strictures.
If you have IBD, NEVER use USANA multivitamins ("Essentials") or USANA calcium supplements. Both have way too much magnesium, which functions as a laxative.
For example, people with IBD often have bone thinning, and so are advised to take around 1,500 mg. of calcium a day to compensate. If you
used USANA's calcium supplement to get this amount, you'd also take in a whopping 800 mg. of magnesium a day.
That's essentially a laxative dose.
If you have IBD, the last thing you need is to lose that much water.
************************ THE BOOKS KEN RECOMMENDS--ARE THEY CONNECTED TO USANA?
Ken often recommends a book entitled "What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You."
The author of this book, Ray Strand, is a paid promoter of USANA merchandise (the corporation prefers the term "member of the USANA medical advisory board").
Strand is a family practitioner with no advanced training in nutrition.
In his entire career, he has never published a single paper--on anytopic--in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
************************ DOES RAY STRAND HAVE A RELIGIOUS AGENDA?
One of the sources Strand cites in his book, "What Your Doctor Doesn't Know...," is:
"Taking Up Your Cross: The Unspeakable Joy of Following Jesus" by Tricia Rhodes
The book also includes these Strand statements, among others:
"I do not have a fear of dying because of my faith in Christ."
"I have no doubt that God is our True Healer."
************************ DOES STRAND OPENLY HYPE THE MERCHANDISE OF HIS EMPLOYER, USANA?
First, you should know that Strand claims that Crohn's disease is one of over 70 chronic degenerative diseases that are caused by oxidative stress. One blurb of his book says:
"[reading his book you will] learn...more about the 'root' cause of over 70 chronic degenerative diseases--oxidative stress--you too will realize that humanity's best safeguard against developing coronary artery disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, lupus, MS, Crohn's disease, macular degeneration, asthma, arthritis, etc, is not found in pharmacology, but is found within our own bodies."
To counteract this oxidative stress, USANA promoter Strand recommends--naturally--USANA merchandise. In his words:
"Why I recommend USANA Products"
"I personally believe USANA Health Sciences has developed and produced the most complete and balanced nutritional products on the market today. In fact, all the clinical case study results documented in my new book, "What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May
Be Killing You," were achieved by using products developed and manufactured by USANA."
******************** Ken also likes to quote from and cite something called "The Comparative
Guide to Nutritional Supplements" by Lyle MacWilliams.
Lyle MacWilliams admits that he is an "independent associate" (translation: salesman) of USANA.
Purely as a coincidence, his book, "The Comparative Guide," ranks USANA merchandise as "Number 1."
The "Comparative Guide" is self-published. The "publisher" has never put out another book.
These are the "experts" who ranked the vitamins in the "Comparative Guide":
1. PHYLLIS BALCHER. Holds no academic position whatsoever. Only credential: member of something called the "American Association of Nutritional Consultants." The group accepts anyone willing to pay the $150 entrance fee. This organization has accepted as members a poodle, a cat, and a hamster .
2. MICHAEL COLGAN. Has published one (1) scientific paper in his entire career. Holds no academic position. Sells his own vitamins, tapes, DVDs, books, newsletters, etc., at his traveling "seminars."
Some of Colgan's fees:
"Power Program Camp": $S1,225
"Anti-Aging Intensive": $1,095
"Power Program Certification Course": Stage 1: $525 Stage 2: $650 Stage 3: $775
3. EARL MINDELL: A "professor" at something calling itself "Pacific Western University." Address for this school: 1650 Westwood Blvd., Suite 205. (Must be a TINY university.) Federal investigators at the U.S. General Accounting Office have labeled this school a "diploma mill"--an operation that essentially just prints up diplomas and sells them to whoever is willing to pay.
4. MICHAEL MURRAY. A "professor" at something called "Bastryr University," which does not even have its own campus; it has to rent one from the local Catholic diocese.
Bastryr awards degrees in "natural healing," among other fields of "expertise."
5. RICHARD PASSWATER: A "professor" at "Bernadean University." Address for this school: 21757 Devonshire, Suite 16 (apparently another tiny university). Passwater received his "Ph.D." from Bernadean--an operation that is not accredited by any group recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
6. RAY STRAND: Paid USANA promoter. What a coincidence: The "book" he contributes his opinions to just happens to rates his company #1!
7. JULIAN WHITTAKER: Has created "a formula that has 17 ingredients that help the eyes. It's called 'Vission Essentials,' and you can call 1-800..."]
********************* KEN SAYS HIS MERCHANDISE IS "PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE." WHAT IS THAT? IS HE
TELLING THE TRUTH?
Ken likes to claim that his merchandise is "pharmaceutical grade"--made in accordance with the same manufacturing standards use to produce prescription drugs. This claim cannot be verified.
For a company to legitimately call its supplements "pharmaceutical grade," it must allow its production facilities and its products to be examined/inspected by a non-profit organization called the U.S. Pharmacopeia.
The USP operates a purely voluntary inspection/verification program just for supplements. USANA will not participate in it. Because USANA won't let the USP perform inspections, we have NO idea what is in USANA
merchandise, let alone whether it is "pharmaceutical grade" or "hog-feed grade."

| scarring in bowel Brad P 00:37:00 |
| | I had a light test Dec 2004 I think it was, and there was scarring in the first part of my bowel leaving my stomach. I suspect scarring is playing a role in food taking hours to empty out of my stomach, causing heartburn. Otherwise, my CD seems to be holding its own. Besides surgery, are there any options to help reduce scarring before it gets to the point where surgery is absolutely necessary? I read one Entocort could help...is there any truth to that? I need to get food moving quicker somehow.

He said there are new concerns about these 2 meds being used together. Some 6? males have died recently. Is there anyone out there that uses these drugs and has heard about some of the recent findings? Anyone out there that can reassure me that taking these drugs are what's best for me. I have 2 small children and I worry about the future.

When I don't have that my lips (corners) crack and sometimes bleed - am so tired of that one!! If it's not those 2 things my bones will ache - it's always something - seems like my immune system just can't cope. Are these lupus symptoms? I have a variety of symptoms that just rotate in my body - in addition to all the CD problems.

What a great newsgroup! Glad i have bumped into it. I'm 25 and a UC sufferer for 5years now. Been on Asacol and pred supps for years now. (lord only knows what they have done to me ) However, gradullay over the last few months my bowel motions seem to be producing ever skinier by-products (only word i can think of that doesn't make me blush).
I've booked an appointment for the Doc, but i just wondered if anyone else has ever had anything similar? If i didn't know better i say my passage physically can't pass the waste matter out in a complete state anymore, so my bowels work overtime to squeez it out. The stuff even looks like its been condensed. As i say, i'm going doctor so i'll know soon, for better or worse, but just wondered if anyone had any similar experiences they could share, or am i truely odd?
much appreicated,

| probiotics and prebiotics Toom Tabard 15:50:17 |
| | At the Society for Applied Microbiology conference in Edinburgh last week, researchers from Dundee University reported on a small-scale trial (9 subjects) of treating chronic ulcerative with probiotic bacteria, along with 'prebiotics' to promote their growth in the gut. There were significant improvements for some of the subjects. They are trying to fund a bigger study and also to investigate the effects on Crohn's disease. The topic of probiotics, yoghurt etc., has arisen before. In my own case, long-term antibiotics and a high-fibre fast elimination 'healthy' diet, cured my ulcerative colitis, which has suggested to me that some balance of good-guy/bad-guy bacteria has relevance in some forms of colitis.

| Random joint pain/stiffness Richard Hatch 06:26:34 |
| | Hello everyone!
I've been lurking for some time, but now I'd like some input on something. I've got Crohn's and have not been doing too badly, for which I think I'm lucky. However, this week, things have changed (I think).
I don't know if it's relevant, so I'll just throw it out there. About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I had a Remicade infusion. I've had it a couple of times before, maybe 5 years ago, when I was firest diagnosed, but not since. It never gave me any problems.
On Tuesday, I woke up with the left side of my jaw aching and stiff. That went away by Thursday, but on Friday, I woke up with a stiff right shoulder. Last (Friday) night my left shoulder started getting stiff, and when I woke up this morning (Saturday), my wrists were hurting.
So, I'm having a hard time typing this with both shoulders and wrists sore, but I wanted to see what you guys thought about it. Could this be because of the Remicade? Maybe it's the Crohn's? I've heard people complain about join pain, but I figured that that meant all joints, or certain joints. This is moving all over the place, and seems to last for a couple of days in each location. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Richard
