Schzoid vs. Asperger: conclusion

Scattered 1 November 2007 02:08:24
 Greetings,
In a recent post I discussed the problem of distinguishing between
AS and SPD (schizoid personality disorder). Due to the responses I got
to that post, additional reflection and a somewhat sureal stay on a
psych ward, I now feel fairly confident that I have AS.

My original post here was at the start of a full-fledged manic episode.
Anyone interested can google my e-mail address to see what a busy bee a
bipolar in a manic phase can be (I obsessively posted verbose,
closely-reasoned treatises on topics like the compatibility or
incompatibility of divine foreknowledge and human freedom). This (as
well as certain things in "real life") eventually led to a
hospitalization. Somewhat surprisngly, the stay at the hospital
resolved things to my satisfaction as far as Aspergers goes.

Two things happened during my (6-day) stay there: I read "Songs of a
Gorilla Nation" by Dawn Princess-Hughes and I had a psychologist
diagnose me. The book made a strong impression on me. I'm not sure why,
really, but I was able to relate to the book more than to several other
first-person accounts of Aspergers that I've read (e.g. "Pretending to
be Normal"). The diagnosis consisted of taking the MMPI and then
talking to a psychologist about it for a half an hour or so. Towards
the end of the meeting she said that the test itself was consistent
with both SPD and AS but that after talking with me it was clear that
AS or some other PDD was the better diagnosis. The psychiatrist who was
in charge of my case also used the word "Asperger" to describe me the
next day (with just a hint of a hedge thrown in). Since a psychiatrist
several years ago also declared me to be not schizioid but to be
somewhere on the autistic spectrum, I now feel fairly confidant that I
have Asperger Syndrome.

What difference does it make? The main one, from my perspective, is
that Asperger's is so much more *hopeful* than schizoid. With
Asperger's you have a lot of resources and support out there. In
particular, there are many good books out there. But for schizioid,
what do you have? The ony thing I can think of is a Yahoo group for
schizoids (which tends to be strange at times) and the book "The
Divided Self" by R.D. Laing. This book describes the schizoid as being
a person who lacks "basic ontological security." I read this book when
I was 16 shortly after being diagnosed as schizoid, and have always
carried around since then that there was something indescribably wrong
about my very existence. It is hard to see how such a message gives a
foundation for actually learning how to cope.

Thanks to everyone here who helped me to clarify my thoughts.
