Who had ADD treatment for more then 20 years?

Steven 7 January 2007 12:05:54
I am seeking someone who had ADD treatment with meds for more then 20
years. Especially treatment with ritalin. I want to know your
experiences of using these meds on the long run.

Thank you for your reply.

Steven

William F. Buckley started taking Ritalin in the fifties for low blood
pressure. I know he took it for a long time, but I don't know if he
is still taking it.

Lest you think otherwise, Raving is the name his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Loonie, gave him. It has nothing to do with his long term Ritalin usag.

I've taken Ritalin for about 21 years now. I switched to Concerta (Concerta doesn't work nearly as effectively; like all of its other similar amphetamine+HCl long-acting pills are incorrectly structured to provide a consistent dosage in the same way other HCl long-acting medicines provide), then to Wellbutrin & Venlafaxine (bad idea; should ONLY be used for depression, otherwise these in combo tend to CREATE depression) and when those didn't work for me I switched back to Ritalin for a year, and switched over to Adderall for awhile - and soon I'm about to try Focalin, which is just the portion of Ritalin that works on the disorder, which neatly allows a person to halve their dosage.

Ritalin is impressive and in combination with good therapy, nutrition, and family support (i.e.- a family that won't let you get away with anything and WILL call you on your BS in between meds and dump your cc in a bag, and dump that bag in a bag full of water and stuff that bag in the freezer ..), but I found that you gradually require dosage levels that begin to rise until the level roughly equals your age at about 25-30 milligrams per dose, and from then on, the effectiveness becomes a crap shoot rather than a given ... but that's just from my history. And you're more likely to have problems waking up in the morning, and with times in between medicine you have the possibility of relapsing into whatever issues that you currently face when off-medication, but it all hits like a freight train during those times instead - and to sum up the difference between Ritalin and Adderall, Ritalin helps you focus, but it's got ups and downs, regarding both its effectiveness AND in its unfortunate side effects from being a powerful stimulant, whereas Adderall simply helps you obssess, which may or may not be a good thing depending on who you are and what you do - in relation to Ritalin, Adderall is also much smoother in its decline in between doses, and you're more likely to remember to eat while on Adderall ... but in my mind, Ritalin is better, despite the risks, and despite the increased chances of getting hit with the physical aspect of a panic attack and anxiety attacks. I'm hoping to change that with the Focalin and with lowering my grain intake & lowering intake of high-glycemic-index foods, but who knows? After Focalin, there's Straterra, but the issue with Straterra is that for the first three months it doesn't work too well, AND it turns some into zombies or gives them headaches or gives heavy nausea ... ALL for the first three months, during what's known as the "ramp-up" period ... and you can't miss a day or you feel really *weird* in the worst way ... and there's a three-month *ramp-down* period if you want to stop taking Straterra- but it's not a stimulant, and it's REALLY effective (perhaps the best, but also the most agonizing for us with AD/HD due to the problem of being able to consistently take it for three months/if you can wait till you raise the dosage to the RIGHT level ... and not just the level the doctor wants to start you on, because chances are that it's three times lower than what you need it at, but you've got to go slow in ramping up the dose.) in managing symptoms but from what I've seen, Straterra and Focalin should be the defacto "adult" AD/HD medications, whereas therapy, (yes therapy as med), family, nutrition, and Ritalin should be the defacto "child" AD/HD. As for Over-The-Counter stuff, I went on a nutritional kick about seven years ago, where I'd research anything to do with the brain and focusing/memory/etc, especially related to "thought-transmitting" chemicals, and did so for about five years obsessively and ONLY if it had clinical studies confirmed/published through FDA & pubmed, or other research organizations and I would look through the statistics to do my best to weed out any hidden assumptions or commercial advertisements - so when I heard about "Attend" just a little while ago, I was a bit pleased, disturbed, and shocked to find among other things, most of the "good" items I researched, along with a bunch more I didn't know about - I didn't get done studying them all, but the ones I did look-up checked out ... however the difference between theory & practice is usually a large gap, and so Attend seems to be a bit of hit-or-miss with AD/HD children & adults, or so it seems from reading "Attend"'s AD/HD web forum - I'm still going to try that avenue anyway to study the results. Finally, there's that other one, starts with a "P" and has something to do with some root in some tree bark - well, the active ingredients from that tree bark are found in green/black/white tea and many healthy berries, and all related pub-med articles with that bark are actually rip-offs of pre-existing articles that deal with antioxidants from sources like (surprise!) green tea... and in fact some company registered that trademark with that tree bark's name ... bad marketing mojo all around ... - but the issue is that if a person with AD/HD takes that sort of formula (basically a specific set of antioxidants related to brain activity) in high dosage, it may give the same effect as Straterra, and so you'd act/feel like a zombie, or feel sick, etc for quite some time ... I don't know how long - presumably as long as it takes for the body & brain to get used to the extra resources or maybe not at all? ... But with all those antioxidants, you'd be pretty darn healthy :-p --
Anyway, that's the summary of 21 years worth of studying the "cures." After all, it's better than perpetual ridicule, misunderstanding, pink slips, unpaid bills, insane asylums, jails, and death ...
Good luck.
