| Methacholine Challenge Guest 00:48:05 |
| | Anyone have any tips on how to ensure the highest probability of passing a methacholine challenge test without displaying any asthmatic symptoms, I've heard they have a 10% margin of error for displaying false positives so I want to do everything possible to boost my chances of not being labelled an asthmatic. Thanks!

| MSM is useful in treating asthma by regulating......... Herbs Wholesale 15:29:34 |
| | MSM is useful in treating asthma by regulating the fluid that covers the airway surface of the lungs, and by preventing an inflammatory response. It also has a normalizing effect on the membrane surface of the lung, and helps to regulate the exchange of gases. http://www.herbs-wholesale.com/MSM/302/1/MSM.htm

| Cured my mild asthma Guest 00:48:43 |
| | Folks, I'm NOT a doctor and I only had MILD asthma, so take this information for what it's worth.
I just wanted you all to know what very simple remedy cured my mild asthma.
I switched my diet to an all raw foods diet, which is effectively considered a "mucous-free" diet, and it is a diet which raw foodists believe is the natural diet of humans. Once I did this, not only did I lose 10 pounds in a month, but my asthma went away as well!!
Again, I am NOT a doctor and I only had MILD asthma. So take this information for what it's worth.
Anyways, it worked for me in my particular situation, and you can read more about raw foods diets at these links. There's lots more resources on the web as well, but these are some of my favorites:
http://www.planetraw.com/living-food.php http://www.planetraw.com/raw-food.php http://www.living-foods.com/news/stripping.html http://www.larabar.com/ -- my favorite snack bars! Available at Trader Joe's & Whole Foods. http://www.rawfoods.com/ http://www.rawfoodsupport.com/ http://www.rawfoodinfo.com/directories/dir_rawrests.html http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/ http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060392622/sw0b-20 -- one of many raw food cookbooks
Anyways, just wanted you guys to know how happy I am! Obviously, this dietary switch probably won't work for everybody, particularly if you have severe asthma. And I have to repeat again: I am NOT a doctor and I only had MILD asthma.
p.s. Sticking to an all raw foods diet is HARD, and I often cheat on my own diet. When I do, I can literally feel the difference in my body.
Hope this helps someone!
See ya, Scott

| Question about Asthma Meds Gkn1999 10:07:37 |
| | I've been a severe asthmatic for many years and have had a hard time being controlled on Advair 500/50, allegra, and bronchodilators. I just got out of the hospital a few hours ago and they increased my meds to Advair 500/50 2x a day, Allegra in the morning, benadryl in the eveing, flonase, singulair for maintenance, albuterol as needed, and for now,i'm tapering down on predisone and taking an antibioitic. In the hospital, they were giving me solumedrol 3x a day. My current peak flow after being in the hospital for 3 days is 200-225. I was just wondering if people seemed to think this much medication is overkill and what other meds are people taking. Are there anygood supplements OTC that help with ashtma. I seem to catch every cold and every cough out there so I'm looking to seee if anyone has suggetions to increase my immune system. I have been to the ER many times and have been hospitalized at least 5 times for my asthma and it's driving me crazy. I have had asthma since I was a kid and am currently 28 years. Any advice about management wouldbe muchappreicated.

| Alternative to Advair ? k8vf-Mark 04:24:41 |
| | After a week back on Advair, I had to go off of it again as my throat was like raw meat and very painful if I spoke or sang. Fungus also.
So, now I am on nothing.
Would it be worth trying Flovent Inhaler plus Serevent discus(the only way we can get it, can't get Advair MDI here either) to see if it was the delivery system causing my grief?
The reason I am willing to try this is that my symptoms were completely
gone, I slept soundly and even my NASAL congestion went away for the first time in years while I was on Advair.
Has anyone else tried this method of delivery? Pricewise it is similar.
Thank you all, I appreciate and need the help.
(BTW, I suggested serevent plus Singulair(already on it) to my pulmonologist and he nixxed it)

| HELP Big A 17:31:50 |
| | I had a sinus surgery in Nov '03. Since then, I have had severe asthma - never had it before. I had severe allergies in the past but never asthma. I have been on at least 10 prednisone bursts, numerous inhalers, etc in the last year and a half. Nothing helps but prednisone.
I even had an upper GI to see if GERD was causing my asthma - no signs - everything looked good.
Now doctors want to maintain me on a low dose of prednisone. I am currently on 15 mg a day, this just keeps me out of the hospital. I would feel good on the high end of bursts but they won't let me do another one. Doctors want to give me a xolair shot - ige level 166.
Do I need to be tested for this bacteria that everyone is talking about. I used to run 30 miles a week, even when taking high doses of prednisone, now I can't walk to my car without gasping for air. I am miserable. Please give me some advice. Thank You!!!

| Xopenex Marcie 17:52:12 |
| | Is anyone aware of Xopenex? My doc says it has the effects of albuterol without the "speedy" side effect. What are your thoughts? I'm using Asmanax 2 puffs daily with this as an emergency inhaler - to be used 3-4 times/day with exacerbations.

| air conditioning at work Melanie 01:48:30 |
| | It's killing me. Thank god for Symbicort. Not sure if its the cold air the air conditioning unit is putting out or all the dust that its blowing around. I'm pretty good outside the office. Inside the office I start wheezing and have to use my inhaler.
I have no sick days left to use this year. I leave the office for an hour every lunch break which helps but then when I come back in I suffer again.
So, next year I think I'll take my 4 weeks vacation in July. Maybe I'll take an extra one month leave of absence. LOL
So, anything I can do? I asked the maintenance engineer but he said there is nothing to be done, its free flow. No hepa filters in sight.
Oh we moved office last November and since then I've been miserable. New building sux.
Working for a living sux.

| What's the Progression Rate for Chronic Bronchitis? Phaeton 20:20:59 |
| | I've just been diagnosed with the "early stages of chronic bronchitis". I was a smoker for 15 years, but I quit smoking around 3 years ago. When I asked my doctor how fast Chronic Bronchitis will progress, or if it will progress at all he simply answered "You've already done the best thing you can do, which is quit smoking."
Maybe he's reluctant to tell me a doom-n-gloom answer? I don't know.
It's very mild. I don't really have a cough, just shortness of breath. It responds very well to a bronchiodialator, (lung function went from 54% to 93% in the before/after spirometer test) and there are some days where the shortness doesn't seem to bother me much.
I'll be 32 next month, so what can I expect with treatment and proper living? Is Chronic Bronchitis something that I treat and live with for a very long time, say into my 60s? Will I be on oxygen bottles and miserable by my 40s? Will this kill me in 5 years?
Stuff on the web is kind of vague- lumping it all together in COPD with asthma and emphysema, or even using all three terms interchangeably. Some websites say that the disease stops when you quit smoking, others say it continues to progress into emphysema until it kills you.
Thanks for any suggestions
-phaeton

| Change in Inhaler? Roger Murray 19:06:47 |
| | As I explained in an earlier posting headed Prednisolone. I started with Asthma about three years ago. At first I was given Asmasal clickhalors, but the condition gradually got worse and my doctor switched to a Symbicort Turbohaler. The reason I think was because in every case positive relief only came after a course of Predisolone tablets. These were to be taken six 5ml tablets a day over two weeks, each course amounting to 58 tablets. So far I have had five courses of these tablets.
Yesterday I was referred to a different doctor at a local specialist clinic dealing with lung conditions. I explained that the condition was always completely cleared after a course of Prednisolone, but after about two weeks of coming off the tablets the symptoms gradually started to return. First with a cough, then with increasing wheezing chest until shortage of breath on exertion until I just couldn't breath, as if somebody had put a bag over my head. I was acutely tired but felt worse when lying down, and at night felt that I was drowning. The slightest exertion would bring on the condition.
The young lady doctor was very positive saying that she thought the asthma was brought on by some permanent underlying problem, rather than just being allergic to something. Her thinking was that as the symptoms always gradually came back after coming off the Prednisolone, instead of just having attacks by coming into contact with some kind of irritant, the problem seemed to be caused be some permanent underlying condition. In fact she wondered if it was asthma in a pure asthma sense, but something else which she was looking to eradicate.
Her thinking seemed to make sense, although I am not qualified to make judgement. She sent me off for a chest x-ray which showed as clear and then took a number of blood tests and asked me to return to see her in three months
She also took me off the Symbicort Turbohalers to be replaced by a Flixotide Accuhaler saying that as I seemed to be entirely dependent on steroid treatment i/e the Prednisolone tablets, which she wanted to get me off. The Flixotide was more steroid based, but less harmful with side effects than the Prednisolone tablets.
Apart from this asthma which took me completely by surprise. I am otherwise healthy, last year riding a motorcycle across the Sahara desert and the year before across India. So I get plenty of fresh air.
I apologise for this long diatribe of my trials and tribulations but I am interested in this groups more varied views.
Over here in Cheshire, England I don't think it is as easy to have open and frank conversation with your doctors as you do in the States. There is still the left over residue of a medical regime which considers itself the exclusive custodians of your body and you the mere mortal are not supposed to know about such things. A kind of mummy knows best syndrome. Thankfully it is changing fast, but as we have a National Health system which although is admirable, is massively overworked, so time with the doctor and specialist is always limited.
Thanks for all your help.
Roger James Murray.
