| Suggestion for dealing with Setbacks 8/03/06 Guest 01:42:58 |
| | I was given this many years ago by my psychologist.... when I was very agoraphobic. I think it contains some good tips and advice, especially #4. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Suggestion for dealing with Setbacks.
1) Immediately scan your surroundings for possible stimuli.
2) Practice imaginal desensitization to the stimuli. When you are relaxed to it`s image, resume in-vivo desensitization.
3) This is no time to make plans to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Find contentment in simple pursuits. Start a journal, call a friend, try a new recipe, watch something grow. Be involved in living, but avoid living in the fast lane.
4) You may find yourself temporarily restricted from certain activities. Make a contract with yourself to practice away from your home once a day. (Away from home may be a stroll down the driveway.) As long as the door closes "behind" you at least once a day, you cannot become housebound.
5) Discover a new aspect of your personality. Make a love list which includes 10 positive points about yourself. Repeat the positives when you feel down.
6) Remember that the experiences of hundreds of agoraphobic`s tells us that this discomfort is temporary. The anxiety no longer has the power to cancel the many strides forward you have made.
7) Setbacks are more and attitude than reality. The heightened anxiety cannot in itself, harm you. A good attitude to maintain would be, "I`m feeling anxious, but I`ve felt anxious before and survived".
8) You are unique, valuable, and ever changing person. Your recovery will be complete and can be accelerated by your new found acceptance.

| [ADVOC] NYS Petition to Revoke "Emergency" Aversives Regulations Leslie E. Packer 17:58:12 |
| | [Note: this is crossposted to relevant groups, but please delete groups when responding to avoid typical usenet crossposted flamewars...]
There is now a petition available to urge the Board of Regents and the NYS Education Department to immediately revoke the "emergency" regulations that they enacted on June 23rd.
Signed petitions must be received by them by August 28. The Board of Regents will be voting at their Sept. meeting as to whether to make the regulations permanent or not.
If you would like to sign a petition to get the new "Aversives" regulations withdrawn, you can find a petition in .pdf format or in .doc format at: http://www.transparencyinpubliceducation.org/files/Petition.pdf http://www.transparencyinpubliceducation.org/files/Petition.doc
Once you've completed it, mail it to your nearest Regent. You can find your Regent's mailing address online at: http://www.regents.nysed.gov/terms.html You can also send your petition by email to your state legislators; their addresses can be found by plugging your zip code into the form at http://www.congress.org,
If you can't send mail to your regent, then at least call them and tell them you are a constituent and that you oppose the new regulations and want them revoked.
The Board and NYSED are holding public hearings for members of the public to submit testimony and input. Information on how to submit feedback and the schedule for public hearings is at: http://www.vesid.nysed.gov/specialed/behavioral/publichearing.htm
If you do sign and send a petition, please send a copy or an email to petition[at]transparencyinpubliceducation.org so that the coalition can get some sense of how many people are contacting the regents on this. Your emails will not be shared with others without your express written consent and you will not be contacted by the coalition unless you specifically request to be put on a notification or mailing list.
BACKGROUND:
These "emergency" regulations, while appearing to prohibit the use of "aversive behavioral interventions" -- such as electric skin shock, ammonia sprays, hot pepper sauce on children's tongues -- actually now open the door for every public school, preschool, state-approved private school, and BOCES facility to use these methods on disabled children if they obtain a waiver to do so. The procedure for obtaining a waiver is that the district basically asks itself and the state, "Can we do this?" and then decides whether it can or can't, regardless of the advice of the state. I kid you not.
The new regulations also weaken the prohibitions against corporal punishment, and allow teachers to use physical force on a child to protect school property even if it is of little economic value, like a crayon.
The regulations are available online at: http://www.regents.nysed.gov/2006Meetings/June2006/0606emscvesida1.htm If you would prefer to download them in pdf format, you can download a copy from: http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/Files/Cort_060606.pdf

| Re: Too many meds, be kind to one another SoftOwl 09:29:54 |
| | I'd like to jump in here a little bit...
I think Ron and Susan are making extraordinarily valuable points here. I'm not sure medication is such a black and white issue. Nor do I think deep breathing and other cognitive coping skills are black and white.
Many times anxiety and panic are so overwhelming it is impossible for someone to identify the root cause negative self talk aspect and they require medication to slow down their minds for no other reason than to "hear" enough to participate in any form of non-medicative treatment.
I find it disturbing to see any levels of hostility on an anxiety/panic board. Most times the disorder rears itself because of hostility, fear or uncertainty in the first place. It would be very helpful if we all try to remember the causes. It would also be helpful not to bang a drum because certain things worked for one person and they now make the assumption it should work for everyone.
In my experience, combinations of many, many techniques - including medications in some cases that finally helps relieve symptoms and restore varying degrees of quality of life. I liken these things to an ex-smoker running around pontificating about how it was SO EASY to stop smoking once it has been accomplished. There is nothing less attractive than that level of pomposity.
I'd not like to see that sort of thing here. I am a former anxiety/panic/agoraphobia sufferer. I felt so strongly about this disorder and how it totally consumed my life at one time, I returned to school. I am a PhD Psychologist and I work almost exclusively with family groups because this disorder is usually not understood by family or friends. The last thing an anxiety sufferer needs is to be considered "insane" while trying to manage treatment and reconditioning.
Thank you for taking the time.

| Anxiety Reducing Techniques 8/02/06 Guest 23:08:14 |
| | ANXIETY REDUCING TECHNIQUES 1. Retreat to a safer place or person, or at least move away from your present situation 2. COGNITIVE COPING STATEMENTS: Immediately start to talk to yourself or to someone else. Use positive statements such as "I can handle it", "It`s just anxiety", "It will pass", and "Nothing terrible will happen to me. Ask yourself, "what am I telling myself that`s scaring me"? Remember, NO PAIN, NO Gain.(Some discomfort is helpful) 3. Take deep , slow breaths 4. Do things slowly 5. DISTRACTION or EXTERNALIZATION: Distract your mind. Put it on something else, such as the coins in your pocket, familiar fragrances or object from a safe place or person. Describe what your senses tell you. STAY IN THE PRESENT. 6. Picture your calm place. Look at an actual picture of a vacation spot, child or pet. Carry this picture with you. 7. Question or challenge the negative thought.....Don`t accept it as fact. 8.THOUGHT STOP/THOUGHT SWITCH: When you find yourself thinking "What if", STOP and switch your thoughts to "SO WHAT IF"?, or other positive thoughts. Accentuate it with a rubber band. 9. EXPECT and ACCEPT the anxiety to be there, so you are not startled by it. Talk to your anxiety. 10. EXPRESS the fear to a piece of paper, a tape recorder, or another person. Expressing the fear makes it go away. 11. Elizabeth, "THIS IS THE BIG ONE"! In reality, IT`s No DIFFERENT from the others. Every reaction seems to be the worst. If you feel brave, try to make the anxiety more intense. 12. Give a number to your anxiety from 1 to 10. Notice it go up and down. 13. Don`t fight the fear, float with it and let time pass. 14. Take an action. Don`t sit and wait for the anxiety to build. 15. Try to keep your muscles relaxed. On the back of the card is this info:
THINGS TO REMEMBER 1. These feelings are normal body reactions, but at a more intense degree. They are distressing, NOT DANGEROUS. 2. Don`t add frightening thoughts. 3. Watch the anxiety rise and fall. 4. Observe how you can function with a low to moderate level of discomfort.
THE 5 R`s REACT: Approach the situation until you react only up to a #3 RETREAT: Stop or back off. Walk away from the situation, either physically or imaginarily. Retreating is NOT COWARDLY. RELAX: Distract your mind and allow yourself to relax. REPEAT: Return to the situation and repeat the process. Try to never leave a situation on a negative note. REWARD YOURSELF: (6th "R") for your efforts.
